There is more than one way to enjoy the ocean. You can spend a morning walking, watch the surf from shore, look for birdlife around the harbor or reserve a wildlife cruise. Choose an activity that suits the actual conditions and the people traveling with you.
A walk is a complete outing
Pick a comfortable stretch of shore and a turnaround point before you set off. Leave time for the return and for breakfast or lunch afterward. The coastline changes with wind, tide and weather, so keep the plan flexible. Check access and posted information at the place you choose.
Surf watching and surfing are different plans
Silver Strand has a surfing identity, but that does not establish suitable conditions for every visitor. Watch from shore, speak with a qualified local operator if you want instruction and match any water activity to experience and conditions. You can enjoy the coast without making entering the water the measure of a good beach day.
Look for the smaller discoveries
The harbor and nearby coast give you chances to notice birds, boats and the movement of the water. Bring binoculars if you enjoy a closer look and keep wildlife undisturbed. A maritime museum visit can be a natural companion, giving a different perspective on the working and recreational waterfront.
Winter: consider a wildlife cruise
The National Park Service identifies mid- to late December through mid-March as a common gray-whale viewing period in the Channel Islands area. Check an operator’s actual schedule and departure harbor, and allow for conditions and wildlife to shape the trip. Read our winter edition for other outings that can fit around the day.
